Do not miss

I can’t recommend Alan’s Tours highly enough. Alan is a charming, expert guide, his vehicles are safe and comfortable, the admin is friendly and efficient and it’s good value for money.

For our Addo day visit, Alan collected us on time and we were in the park for about 10 hours We had two drives, with an excellent restaurant lunch included in the price. Alan not only knows his stuff, he is a great spotter who anticipates what animals are going to do and gets into pole position for his clients to take pictures.

We have done several safaris and for all round interest this was the best. We saw lots of elephants really close up, as well as buffalo, zebras, ostriches, jackals, warthogs, kudu, hartebeest, mongoose, tortoise and many interesting birds and plants.

There are no hippos or giraffes but that is because Addo doesn’t import non-native animals as some private reserves do (but I’m sure Alan would take you to these too).

The next day we did the 3 hour Cape Recife tour. This was booked as a time filler but proved to be really fascinating. We visited the penguin sanctuary and the lighthouse, to which Alan has privileged access: we climbed to the top and could see the Victorian machinery and modern IT that keeps it running. After a walk on the beach we finished in the nature reserve at the university (another thing you can’t do with other guides).

Strongly recommended if you have time to spare in PE. Alan also offers tours of Kruger and other places.
