Day 1, Night 1
Port Elizabeth to Kouga Wilderness area
Meet and greet by Alan Tours at 8:30 am in Port Elizabeth and depart for the Kouga wilderness area a part of the Baviaanskloof world heritage site.
We leave Port Elizabeth along the picturesque Wild side coastal route and head for our first stop at a lovely wild flower reserve for a comfort break and a leg stretch before continuing to one of the earliest European settlements in this part of the Eastern Cape.
Here we stop to look at some of the more interesting features before joining the old Cape road and onto a picturesque route through the valleys with extensive fruit orchards and quaint farm stalls.
View old president’s graves and exquisite churches before leaving the main road and entering the remote wilderness area.
Here we travel ever further from the last of the farms to an area that even the early Khoisan must have considered remote as it is here on the walls of a great sandstone overhang that they left their intricate paintings and a cultural leader safely buried in the white sands of this cavern.
It is in one of these remote valleys that we find our lodge surrounded by Yellow and Ironwood trees. Our comfortable accommodation is so remote that there is neither phone coverage nor electricity to disturb your inner thoughts.
A home cooked meal before a well-deserved nights rest in our stone chalets with all of the conveniences at our disposal.
Overnight guesthouse, lunch, dinner, bed and breakfast
Day 2
Kouga Wilderness to Port Elizabeth
After scrumptious breakfast we set off on a walk to view Bushman rock art; it is a walk in a botanical wonderland as well as providing an insight into the ancient world of the Bushmen, the first of the world’s modern people. A firm but easy walk brings us into the cavern to view what is left of their symbolic art before heading back to the lodge and check out.
If the opportunity arises we might have time to visit a unique honey bush tea farm that has been in the family’s possession for over 100 years before returning to Port Elizabeth.
