Day 1, Night 1
Port Elizabeth to Great Fish River Reserve
8:30 am pick up at place of residence in Port Elizabeth and depart for the malaria free Addo Elephant National Park with its population of close to 700 African Elephants, herds of Buffalo, Lions and Leopard amongst the many species of antelope, Zebra and Warthog as well as the rich and diverse bird and reptile life that inhabit this expanded National Park, one of the most popular in South Africa.
After entering we check in and immediately start our game viewing experience searching for the many and diverse creatures in the thickets and on the open plains while learning about the habitat in which they live. Arriving at the main camp we enjoy a light lunch.
In the afternoon we are departing to the heart of the Frontier country, Grahamstown, a historic university city, our last stop before reaching the remote and rugged Great Fish River Reserve.
We arrive at the Great Fish River Reserve via the low level river crossing, if possible, and stop at Fort Double Drift to explore briefly these lonely ruins of a British military outpost, with its succulent valley bushveld and panoramic views.
We check into our comfortable accommodation as the sun sets over ancient Africa.
Alan Tours will start the evening fire on which we prepare our evening meal, a traditional South African braai (barbeque), relating stories and details of the day at the fireside while a trillion stars light the night sky, before making our way to bed, lulled to sleep in our comfortable accommodation by the sounds of the African night.
Overnight chalet/cottage, lunch, dinner (braai), bed and breakfast
Day 2, Night 2
Great Fish River Reserve to Wild Coast
Early wake up with coffee, tea and rusks before departing for a morning game drive. We are searching for some of the nocturnal creatures, small cats, Jackal and the shy Leopard before they lie up for the day.
Returning to the lodge we enjoy a hearty breakfast before departing for the Wild Coast.
Traveling through picturesque countryside towards the Coast we enter the old Transkei, characterized by rural communities, living in round, colourfully painted traditional homes, constructed of mud with conical thatched roofs that are fast disappearing.
Stop for lunch at the Kei River Bridge before continuing for the Mbashe River, on whose banks, at Qunu and Mveso our elder statesman, Nelson “Rolihlahla” Mandela, was born and raised.
The road gets rougher as the scenery becomes more attractive as we wind our way to our hotel where we check in, in time to enjoy our well-earned dinner.
Overnight Wild Coast, lunch, dinner, bed and breakfast
Day 3, Night 3
Wild Coast
Early wake up for coffee, tea and rusks before depart through coastal dune forest alive with sub-tropical bird life and monkeys heading for the Mbashe River mouth where we board the canoes to cross this magnificent river estuary.
We walk under the guidance of one of the local tribesmen on the deserted beach where the only foot prints to be seen are your own. Secluded rivers with the southern most crocodiles in Africa add an element of adventure while we keep our eyes open for White Rhinos, Cape buffalo and Zebra as they graze amongst the herds of Nguni cattle.
We reach the last point where the bleached bones of a great Humpback whale are guarded by the middens of discarded seashells left by the first nation, the ancient Khoikhoi.
Here, we take a picnic lunch on the rocks overlooking the remnants of a shipwreck just below the waves, surrounded by Gulls and Gannets, while Whales and Dolphins surface nearby.
We return to the hotel for a quite rest before embarking on a short drive to the nearby Mbanyane point, a renowned and picturesque surf spot accessed through lovely forest glades.
Overnight Wild Coast, lunch, dinner, bed and breakfast
Day 4
Wild Cost to Port Elizabeth
Early wake up for a tea and coffee before departing in the vehicle for the Cwebe forest and an easy walk to the nearby waterfall through towering indigenous hard wood forest.
We return to the hotel for breakfast, check out and our departure back to Port Elizabeth and the end of the tour.
